Nigel Waymouth and Michael English who formed the graphic design partnership, Hapshash and The Coloured Coat in 1966. However, it was Joe Boyd and John Hopkins, the organisers of the legendary UFO Club, famous for combining live music with light shows, avant garde films and slide shows, who had the idea that their combined talents might produce something special for the club's posters. Of the poster art Waymouth stated "We were trying to give a visual concept of what we were experiencing, which was like hallucinations."

Nigel Waymouth seen here signing new edition silk screen prints at the Hapshash exhibition at the Utrecht Record & CD show in November 2013.

Hopkins and Boyd hired the use of the Blarney Club at 31 Tottenham Court Road under the Gala Cinema from December 1966 until October 1967. Pink Floyd were a regular at UFO until they outgrew the small venue, Adam Ritchie was lucky enough to be able to photograph Pink Floyd during this time. Ritchie comments, “At UFO, Roger Waters was a bit over photographer-friendly and always stage front. Syd remained hidden behind a microphone so hard to get. Nick and Richard were busy playing and ignored photographers. I was amazed that they used two glittered go-go dancers. It seemed old fashioned, but maybe they were just encouraged rather than paid.” Rare footage of Pink Floyd at UFO, shared by Pure Evil Gallery shows a special recording of Interstellar Overdrive made for Peter Whitehead's 1967 documentary, Tonight Let's All Make Love In London, and is a visual treat for Mod enthusiasts everywhere.

UFO was a hot bed for discovering up and coming talent not only in music and visual art but also even in food. Everything served at UFO was macrobiotic and included brown rice rissoles, vegetarian stuffed vine leaves and felafel, supplied by Craig Sams, who went on to co-found Whole Earth Foods and Green & Black's.

So next time you are visiting MJCP in Clerkenwell it’ll be easy to spot our ever-helpful team wearing these.
